Since its inception in 2005, Debo has funded a broad range of projects that covers education, health, water development, reforestation and a micro-lending program for communities in rural Ethiopia.

Our first comprehensive program was launched in Aftenet, a remote and impoverished village in the central highlands of Ethiopia. There, we built classrooms, a large library/learning center and established a kindergarten read more; we awarded 91 scholarships to outstanding middle school Aftenet students heading to high school in Mehalmeda, a nearby town read more. We provided loans, equipment and training in bee keeping, butter churning  and sheep rearing for 56 families and a community association read more. We also distributed 771,093 tree seedlings for Debo’s reforestation program read more

Debo initiated its subsequent program in Mehalmeda, a rural town of 16,000 inhabitants, about a two hour walk from Aftenet Village. Since the surrounding villages, including Aftenet, do not have high schools, students who graduate from middle school have to commute daily by foot or rent lodgings to continue their education in Mehalmeda. In February 2007, Debo, through its local partner, Debo Yeerdata Mahiber, was granted 31,000 square feet of land to build a library/learning center in Mehalmeda to accommodate both the student population and the community at large read more. The estimated completion date is December 2009.

In November 2006, we launched our first water development project in a rural community, at the foot of the Semien Mountains in North Gondar, Ethiopia. Here, we assisted the community to transform a parasite and bacteria infested spring into a viable source of clean, safe drinking water read more
