Students terminate their studies after middle school due to the absence of high schools in the vicinity; lack of textbooks and school supplies; or financial hardship of their families. Debo awards scholarships to all Aftenet students who wish to continue their education in a high school in Mehalmeda once they pass the national comprehensive exam with good grades.

Laschalew |
Laschalew, a sixteen year old boy and an honor student in Aftenet School is also the bread winner for his family. During school break he travels great distances to find odd jobs to provide for his family.
“I have endured hardship. I know that education is the only ticket out of poverty for me and my family. I want to be a teacher in my community. I want to help other boys and girls have better education and better opportunities. Without Debo's scholarship program I would have not been able to continue to attend school for very long.”
Laschalew attended high school in Mehalmeda in the fall of 2007 and continued to excel in school. In June 2009, he got promoted to 11th grade with honors and will continue to receive Debo scholarship.

On Debo Scholarship for a Third Year
All five girls were awarded scholarship to continue their education in a nearby town. They attend vocational school and are closer to achieving their dreams of becoming teachers and secretaries.

Zebene grew up in Aftenet Village and comes from a family of eight. He became a recipient of Debo’s scholarship program in 2006. He now attends a teacher’s training program in Debre Birhan. He is determined to get his teacher’s certificate and look for better opportunities. “I have a plan for my future which would not have been possible without the support of Debo’s scholarship program. If I study hard now, I know that tomorrow I will have a great future. I like school and I like to study. My goal is to be the best teacher in the world!
“I m proud of Zebene’s achievements, he is intelligent, hard working and persistent,” says Zebene’s former English teacher at Aftenet School.
Birukit grew up in Aftenet village and attended Aftenet School. Like Zebene she became a recipient of Debo’s scholarship program in 2006. She now attends a teacher’s training program in Debre Birhan. “After I receive my teacher’s certificate, I want to teach in the same community where I grew up. Before Debo’s scholarship program I could never have imagined I’d be where I am today. I have been given the opportunity for a different and better future. I have learned so much and gained so much confidence. I want other girls to have the same opportunity as me.”
