Only
12 percent of the population in rural Ethiopia has access to
clean water. Lack of safe, drinking water is a constant source
of hardship causing many to suffer from water borne diseases. Beyond
the issues of health, access to safe drinking water affects the
lives of women and children who traditionally are responsible
for water collection, a back breaking chore that restricts their
involvement in productive activities.
In November 2006, Debo started construction of a much needed
water spring at Kino Libanos, a remote village in Gondar, Ethiopia.
1,200 people now benefit from a clean water source. In addition,
women and children of the community no longer have to trek great
distances to obtain water. Instead while the mothers devote themselves
to caring for the family, their children have time to attend
school.
